Manchester United have released a statement outlining their next steps following news that a criminal case against Mason Greenwood had been dropped.

United acknowledged the latest update on Greenwood in an official statement posted to the club's website.

It reads: "Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped.

"The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete."

A decision on his future on the field will likely be resolved when United provide their next update. He remained on the club's website in the men's first team squad section following the news of charges being dropped.

The 21-year-old was arrested in January 2022 and indefinitely suspended by United. He was eventually released on bail but was arrested again for breaching those conditions, before being charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour.

Greenwood was set to stand trial in November 2023 before the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed that all charges in relation to the case against him had been dropped.

The 21-year-old said in a statement: "I am relieved that this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support. There will be no further comment at this time."

Manchester United will conduct an internal investigation into Mason Greenwood after a charge of attempted rape was dropped and the forward will not play for them or train with them until it is concluded.

The 21-year-old was charged in October with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm after being arrested in January 2022.

But all charges were dropped after the Crown Prosecution Service said key witnesses withdrew their involvement and new material came to light.

Greenwood has been suspended by the club since the allegations first emerged, along with images and videos, last year.

Now United want to look into the circumstances around the allegations as they have launched an investigation. There is no timeframe for it to be concluded and Greenwood will not feature for United in the meantime.

United said in a club statement: “Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped. The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”

Greenwood, who has been capped once by England, has scored 35 goals in 129 games for United, including becoming the club’s youngest scorer in European football.

Charges of attempted rape and assault against Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood were dropped on Thursday due to the withdrawal of key witnesses, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced. A charge of controlling and coercive behavior was also dropped, according to the CPS.

A spokesperson in the CPS statement said, “In this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case. We have explained our decision to all parties.

“We would always encourage any potential victims to come forward and report to police and we will prosecute wherever our legal test is met.”

CNN reached out to Greenwood’s legal representation for comment but did not immediately hear back. According to The Guardian, Greenwood denied the charges of attempted rape.

A Manchester United statement released Thursday said, “Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped.

“The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”

Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, Greater Manchester Police’s (GMP) head of public protection, said in a statement the decision to drop charges was not “taken lightly” and reiterated “GMP’s commitment to investigating allegations of violence against women and girls.”

Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and section 47 assault of a woman in October 2022.

Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 following the emergence of videos and images on social media. The 21-year-old, who has played once for England, was suspended by Manchester United the same month and has not played for the club since. Nike also suspended its relationship with Greenwood.
